The Oechsle hydrometer is an aerometer for the simple determination of sugar content via the density of a liquid. It is used above all with must, juice and applications close to fermentation, in order to better estimate the must weight and the approximate fermentation potential.
Important properties
- Measuring principle: aerometer via density determination
- Suitable for: must, juice and starting samples before or at the beginning of fermentation
- Helpful for: assessing sugar content, must weight and fermentation potential
- Important: the hydrometer must float freely and the sample should be as clear as possible.
Important note on measurement
The Oechsle hydrometer measures the density of the entire liquid. Not only sugar, but also turbidity, temperature, other dissolved substances or alcohol already formed can influence the reading. It is therefore particularly suitable for samples before or at the beginning of fermentation.
Recommended accessories
For a clean measurement, the 250 ml measuring cylinder is recommended. The hydrometer must touch neither the bottom nor the wall and should float freely in a calm, ideally clear sample.
